agruener > Unfortunately it is much slower than the older version. (Palm)
elch33> it works as quickly as ever (PPC)

When I first generated the English text-only Wikipedia I had the same problem on my PPC. I don't know what causes TR3 to slow down, and with very long compile times (a week per revision) could not do much experimenting. So I tried removing all aliasses (redirects), which are half of the entries, to see if index size had something to do with it. That cured the problem on my PPC.

For the German Wikipedia I left all redirects in, because it has fewer entries than the English wp.

Even with delays I suppose the redirects are quite valuable and it would be a pity to leave them out. For a real explanation of what causes this problem and possibly a TR3 cure you have to ask Yadabyte. (but don't expect a solution anytime soon)

Orbiter > But what is the difference between the PPC and the Palm version?

TomeRaider for Palm is quite inferior to TomeRaider for PPC. The PPC version uses the Explorer engine, so has full support for html, css, unicode.
For instance table syntax on TR3 Palm is sorely missed. The differences have become smaller now that I use png images for math, instead of own html rendered math, which needed html table syntax. The Palm file tries to make the best of limitations, but frankly I'm not sure it is worth the trouble, as most non- supported html and css will simply be ignored on Palm version.

Itsme and others: You can run both versions on both platforms and compare to judge for yourself. Itsme can you give some specific titles where tables are skipped?

Elch33: : I noticed that you have exported the Database as of July 19, 2007. A

This date is taken from the file timestamp and reflects the date that I downloaded and unpacked the dump.
I should remember to update the file date to match the date shown on the download page,
    e.g. http://download.wikimedia.org/dewiki/20070701/
I'm not sure from the top of my hat, why my newest scripts generate less articles, when same input was used, and whether that is an improvement or not, but the difference is 0.1%.

The files published elsewhere use a much older version of my script. I spent from X-mas 2006 till a month ago to update the scripts for ever expanding Mediawiki syntax. The main reason that most tables looked so lousy with older script is they contain lots of conditional templates these days, which did not exist in this form a year ago.

Text-only TomeRaider files that contain the full unabridged articles of the German Wikipedia and were produced with my latest scripts are now online for both Windows Mobile (= Pocket PC) and Palm users. Feel free to post them on other sites.

A DVD with raw data (TomeRaider input files) is on its way to Toem, for producing a Mobipocket version.

I plan to produce a German Wikipedia with images in one or two months and offer that one on DVD for sale. First I'm off to the yearly Wikimania conference, this year in Taiwan.

Thank you all for your earlier feedback on my comments (as posted by Alexander).

First I want to withdraw "And precisely the Germans all want a free ride." That sounds indeed like complaining, and I have no complaints about using the scripts that I published for free. It should have sounded like explaining why I have new thoughts about future script releases.

    As Millenium3000 put it:
"Und nun zu sagen die Deutschen wollen alle was kostenlos ... Nun, natürlich! Wenn es frei angeboten wird, dann nimmt man es auch. Warum nicht? Es bringt Nutzen und kostet nichts. Das ist gut! Warum soll man da nein sagen?"
    Again, I agree.

    Juggernaut:
"den ruhm sollte man ihm dann aber auch gönnen (aber das war ja wohl der fall). "

Not in the case of Mobipocket. My name was mentioned on page 15 after others had gotten most credit. Nobody ever told me there was a Mobipocket edition, I found out a full year later. That was not a very honorable thing to do.

    Toem:
"Ich hatte mich nämlich damals bei ihm entschuldigt und ihn gefragt, in welcher Form er genannt oder verlinkt werden möchte. Darauf kam keine Antwort."

What I wanted was too obvious to explain in further detail. Leave the introduction on page 1 that mentions my work and web address. You could add a section that explains conversion effort, and names other contributors. If you really cared to make up for your predecessor you could have noted my contribution on Wikipedia in the Mobipocket section. Should I do that myself?

    To quote Millenium3000 again:

I have several things to say about this:
1: What I do is perfectly within GPL. Even the founder of Wikipedia makes money from open source software by using it on Wikia. Many other Wikipedia old hands have found some way to make a little money from what they and others produced for free.
2:For almost 5 years I do several other active large projects for Wikipedia, which I did and do all for free. Both international Wikistats and EasyTimeline are major contributions, which bring me much more recognition and gratitude from within the Wikimedia community than the TomeRaider project. Check my home page http://infodisiac.com for details on my other work.
3: I am not charging for the work that others did at all. In that case I would have to ask thousands of euros per copy. I am charging a very modest fee for the value that I added. Even more so: I only charge for the value that I added in 2006/2007. People can order a recent copy built from my earlier scripts without any costs on known download sites. If people want a brand new edition with lots of new code, including better math rendering, conditional template syntax and more, they want my work, not that of others.

So what I consider would be fair is as follows:
1: I produce a German version with images and offer that for sale. People who don't want to pay download the free version built with earlier scripts, like they do today.
2: I produce a text-only edition for Palm and Pocket PC and offer that for free download, like I did earlier. I produce a clean text source for conversion to Mobipocket and send that to Toem.

Of course people can technically and legally buy one copy of the image version and upload that for others, but I am sure no-one would expect me to be motivated to publish new editions after that.

    Looking forward to your comments.
